Advanced technologies and surgical techniques have added new liposuction options for patients to remove stubborn fat permanently. Dr. Stephen M. Miller offers several liposuction techniques and tailors the procedure to his patients’ unique body shapes and cosmetic goals.
Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure that removes unwanted fat using suction technology and trims your silhouette with one of these methods.
Tumescent Liposuction
Tumescent liposuction uses a tumescent solution made of a mixture of lidocaine and epinephrine. This liquid anesthetic numbs the treated area, constricts blood vessels, and swells the fatty area, making it easier to break up fat cells and remove them. Once the area is numbed, Dr. Miller inserts a small, hollow tube (cannula) through a small incision. The cannula connects to tubing and a suction device that removes the unwanted fat. Tumescent liposuction is the traditional fat removal method and may be preferred if you wish to reintroduce the fat elsewhere, such as the breasts or buttocks.
SmartLipo TriPlex
SmartLipo TriPlex is a laser-assisted liposuction technique that liquefies the unwanted fat cells before suctioning them out of the body. The laser technology uses three wavelengths emitted from a thin laser fiber inserted through tiny incisions in the treated area. The first wavelength ruptures and destroys the fatty tissues, and the second targets blood vessels to ensure less bleeding and bruising than conventional liposuction. The third wavelength uses heat energy to contract the skin and push the body to create new collagen and elastin in the treated area for tighter skin and a slimmer body shape.
While other liposuction techniques use general anesthesia, SmartLipo TriPlex uses local anesthesia, so you’re awake but numb. Laser-assisted liposuction often requires less recovery time than traditional lipo because there is less tissue trauma, bleeding, and post-op bleeding.
Ultrasound-Assisted Lipoplasty (UAL)
Ultrasound-assisted liposuction uses a special cannula that emits ultrasound energy into the tissues to break down and liquefy fat cells. Dr. Miller inserts the cannula through small incisions in the target area, and the cannula vibrates rapidly as it emits ultrasonic waves. The ultrasound energy is typically sent from below the skin’s surface but could be directed from above the skin.
These liposuction methods are safe, effective, and FDA-approved. The right liposuction technique for your needs depends on your cosmetic goals. A consultation with Dr. Miller can determine the proper procedure to eliminate your stubborn fat for good.
