Your skin’s supply of collagen and elastin plummets as you get older. This change leads to facial wrinkles, sagging, and other visible signs of aging. Facelift surgery, considered the gold standard for facial rejuvenation, is the most comprehensive way to address these concerns.
Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Stephen Miller has nearly 20 years of experience providing unintimidating patient care and exceptional results. He will gladly determine if a facelift is the best way to enhance your appearance.

WHAT IS A FACELIFT?
Facelift surgery removes and tightens excess skin. It also smooths out wrinkles and folds, reduces the look of jowls and a double chin, and improves deep facial tissues. A significant benefit of facelift surgery is that it can address so many areas of the face in one procedure.
The goal of a facelift is to restore a more youthful and vibrant appearance. It does so by lifting and firming the face. Most facelift patients look seven to ten years younger after surgery.
IDEAL FACELIFT CANDIDATES
You may be an excellent candidate for a facelift if you have signs of facial aging, but your skin still maintains some elasticity. It is also important to have a strong and well-defined bone structure.
As with any cosmetic procedure, facelift surgery requires good general health and realistic expectations. You can find out if a facelift is right for you during a consultation with Dr. Miller.
HOW IS A FACELIFT PERFORMED?
A facelift can take from three to six hours, depending on the complexity of the procedure. This surgery is done on an outpatient basis with general anesthesia.
Incisions are made that are hidden in the hairline, the natural creases of the ear, and in the lower scalp. The skin is separated from the underlying fat and muscle. The fat may be trimmed or suctioned to improve contour. After deep tissues are tightened, the excess skin is redraped, trimmed, and sutured into place.
A blepharoplasty (for wrinkles and/or bags around the eyes), liposuction (for the removal of fat under the chin), or laser surgery (for skin rejuvenation) may be performed in conjunction with a facelift procedure. You can discuss these additional options with Dr. Miller.

POTENTIAL FACELIFT SURGERY RISKS
As with any surgery, there are risks involved. Possible risks include nerve damage and delayed wound healing. Smokers are required to refrain from smoking before and after the procedure to reduce the likelihood of complications.
Dr. Miller will fully present the potential risks to you during your consultation. Having a qualified plastic surgeon perform your surgery minimizes the likelihood of complications.
FACELIFT RECOVERY AND AFTERCARE
You will receive detailed instructions about your post-surgical care. Recovery time will vary depending on the extent of your surgery and the addition of complementary procedures.
Here is a general outline of what to expect after your facelift:
- You may experience some degree of bruising and swelling that progressively resolves over two to four weeks.
- Bed rest the day of surgery is recommended.
- Limit activity for the first week following surgery.
- Avoid strenuous activities for about one to two weeks.
- Return to work within ten to fourteen days.
Sun protection, with at least an SPF of 15, should be used for a minimum of six months after surgery. It is always a good idea to protect the skin from the damaging rays of the sun, and this can also preserve the facelift.
HOW MUCH DOES A FACELIFT COST?
The price of a facelift varies by patient depending on the degree of correction required. Factors such as surgical center costs and anesthesia also influence the cost of facelift surgery.
Our team will gladly provide you with a personalized price estimate. A facelift is considered a cosmetic procedure; therefore, insurance will not cover it.
NONSURGICAL ALTERNATIVES TO A FACELIFT
A facelift is the most comprehensive way to treat visible signs of aging, including sagging skin, deep folds, and wrinkles. But there are other effective options if you are looking to avoid surgery.
Our practice offers the Profound® Non-Surgical Facelift. This radiofrequency microneedling treatment unlocks your skin’s natural rejuvenation abilities. You can think of Profound as a middle ground between surgery and injectables.
Facelift FAQ’s
How Long Do the Results of a Facelift Last?
The results of a facelift can last for years, depending on factors such as your skin type, age, lifestyle, and how well you take care of your skin after surgery. While a facelift turns back the clock, the natural aging process continues. Proper skin care, sun protection, and a healthy lifestyle can help prolong your results. Some patients may choose to undergo a revision facelift after several years to maintain their rejuvenated look.
How Can I Prepare for My Facelift Consultation?
To make the most of your consultation with Dr. Miller, it’s helpful to come prepared. You should:
- List any medications or supplements you’re currently taking, as some may affect healing or increase surgical risks.
- Be ready to discuss your medical history, including any prior surgeries or conditions.
- Have a clear idea of your aesthetic goals, including which areas of your face you’d like to address.
- Bring photos of yourself from earlier in life to help guide the conversation about your desired outcome.
Dr. Miller will assess your facial structure, skin condition, and overall health to determine if you’re a good candidate for a facelift or another procedure.
What Is the Difference Between a Facelift, a Mid-Facelift, and a Neck Lift?
A facelift typically focuses on lifting and tightening the skin and tissues in the lower two-thirds of the face, addressing sagging skin, jowls, and deep creases around the mouth and nose. A mid-facelift, on the other hand, targets the middle portion of the face, particularly the cheeks, to restore volume and reduce sagging in this area.
A neck lift is often combined with a facelift but can also be performed separately. It addresses sagging skin and muscle bands in the neck, creating a smoother, more defined jawline.
Dr. Miller will guide you in choosing the right procedure based on your unique concerns and desired results.
Where Are Facelift Scars?
Facelift incisions are typically made along the natural contours of the face to minimize visible scarring. Most incisions are hidden along the hairline, around the ears, and occasionally under the chin.
Dr. Miller takes great care in making the incisions as inconspicuous as possible, and with proper healing, scars tend to fade significantly over time. In most cases, facelift scars are not noticeable to others and can be concealed easily with makeup or hair.
What’s the Best Age for a Facelift?
There isn’t a specific “best” age for a facelift since every person ages differently. However, most patients considering a facelift are typically in their 40s to 60s. Early signs of aging, such as loose skin and deep wrinkles, can be addressed with a mini facelift or non-surgical treatments, while more advanced aging may require a traditional facelift.
Dr. Miller can help you decide when the timing is right for a facelift based on your personal aging process and the condition of your skin.
What’s the Recovery Like After a Facelift?
After your facelift surgery, you can expect some swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which will gradually subside over the next two to three weeks. Most patients feel comfortable returning to work and social activities within 10 to 14 days, though strenuous activities should be avoided for at least four weeks.
Dr. Miller will provide detailed post-operative instructions to help you heal quickly and comfortably. It’s important to attend follow-up appointments to ensure that you are healing properly.
